Cross-border tickets

The cross-border ticket is the ideal solution for those who need to travel occasionally across the border for personal or business reasons, with the convenience of a unique ticket valid in Ticino and Lombardy.

Cross-border tickets

Cross-border tickets are valid in Ticino and Lombardy for all modes of transport on the Arcobaleno integrated fare network (CTA) as well as on all Trenord regional and suburban trains. The price of cross-border tickets is calculated by adding together the zone prices for Arcobaleno (or the Swiss section) and the Italian kilometre fare (for the section in Lombardy).

Further information

The Arcobaleno integrated fare network offers different cross-border tickets depending on the mobility requirement:

  • Single journey, ADULTS
  • Single journey, HALF FARE TRAVELCARD
  • Single journey, YOUNG PERSONS UP TO 16 YEARS
  • Outward and return journeys, ADULTS
  • Outward and return journeys, HALF FARE TRAVELCARD

All tickets are available for 1st and 2nd class and must be validated before starting the journey and shown at ticket checks upon request.

Fares

The period of validity of the round-trip ticket for the entire journey is 4 hours:

  • in Italy: starting from the moment of the compulsory validation of the ticket
  • in Switzerland: starting from the date and time specified on the ticket itself.

For Arcobaleno fare network, the validity period of return tickets is equivalent to a day pass.
For Trenord, return tickets are valid for two journeys (one outward and one return) on the specified route and until midnight on the day of (obligatory) validation. Tickets must be validated at the Italian departure stations.
